Awkward Valentine's Day

They headed to the park holding hands, looking like any other young couple. That realization made Anri a little flustered, but she also wasn't having a bad time, so she told herself there was no reason to be embarrassed. Mikado's hand felt really nice around hers. She never thought she would be doing anything like this with anyone; she had resigned herself to that fact long ago. But now that it was actually happening, she had to admit that it felt good.

After they arrived, Mikado found them a bench right by the fountain. He opened the box, relieved to see that the cakes were unharmed. After hearing all the flavors, Anri contemplated for a minute. She finally picked out the strawberry one.

She looked back up at Mikado and noticed he seemed to be in deep thought about something. "Is everything alright?" she asked, a bit nervous.

Is he thinking about what he saw before? What if he's changed his mind and is going to reject me? These doubts swirled in Anri's thoughts as she waited for his response.

Mikado took a deep breath and locked his eyes with Anri’s. A determined look came across his face, something inside just took over as he said the following words.

“Anri, will you be my girlfriend?”

There it was. He said it. He understood his reason for asking her that and meant every word. One thing was for sure, it definitely got his message across that he wanted to become someone close to her.

However after only what seemed a second, Mikado sort of shook himself back to his senses.

What in the world did he just blurt out!?

Mikado’s face burst bright red out of embarrassment and immediately turned his back to her and covered his face with his hands. In the back of his head, Mikado could only think of the many ways Anri would reject him and probably never want to see him again.

Oh gods…Oh gods! Now what do I do!?

Anri was so shocked by Mikado's sudden outburst that she couldn't respond for several moments. There were several possible responses that she thought Mikado might say, but that particular one never crossed her mind once.

Mikado blushed brightly and turned his back to her. She blinked a couple times, trying to gather her thoughts. She had suspected Mikado had a crush on her for a while now. But she did not expect him to address it to suddenly.

She cleared her throat to break the awkward silence then gently placed her hand on Mikado's shoulder.

"Sorry, Mikado, I didn't mean to make you nervous...I just didn't know how to respond," she said, hoping he wasn't too embarrassed.

"I-um.." Anri found herself blushing now, she had never considered having a boyfriend to be a possibility for herself. She didn't know if she was capable of love, but being with Mikado felt nice. She felt like she could trust him, after all, he didn't reject her after finding out what she was.

"Yes," she said quickly, not trusting herself to say anything else. She looked down, attempting to hide her own blush.
