Character Biography
Short Bio: Saki grew up with her mom and older brother in Tokyo, just outside of Ikebukuro. Her father made good money, but he travelled for a living, so Saki rarely ever saw him growing up and her brother, who was ten years older than her, became a strong father figure in her life. When her brother was 18, he moved into Ikebukuro for work, and Saki went with him to go to a better school in the district. Four years later, her brother was mugged and killed as the result of local gang violence; Saki was obviously very devastated by the loss. Not wanting to interrupt her daughter’s schooling, Saki’s mother joined the girl at her brother’s apartment in the city.
Only about six months after her brother’s death, Saki herself was cornered by a gang member… only to be rescued by Izaya Orihara. Over the next few weeks, the older teen began to appear over and over in her life and her attachment to him grew. Izaya quickly became her brother’s replacement and Saki developed a strong trust in him.
It was in middle school that, under Izaya’s orders, Saki met Masaomi Kida. Izaya had initially ordered Saki to like Masaomi, but it didn’t take long for her feelings to become genuine. After just a short while, the two began to date, though Masaomi never approved of her trust in Izaya. A few months into their relationship, as the violence between the Yellows Scarves and the Blue Squares was at its worst, Izaya told Saki that the only way to stop the violence was to hand herself over to the Blue Squares.
While in their custody, the Blue Squares broke her leg in order to torment Masaomi and probably would have continued to torture the girl until she died if she hadn’t been promptly rescued by Kadota and his friends. Saki was taken to the hospital, where she stayed for over a year, watching out her window for when Masaomi would come to “visit” her from the street in front of her hospital room. Izaya ordered her to pretend to be unable to walk in order to cause Masaomi continued guilt over his inability to save her.
Eventually, Masaomi is able to overcome his fears, confront his old enemies (though he is injured in the process), while, at the same time, Saki finds the strength to disobey Izaya and contact Simon at Russian Sushi to tell him everything that Izaya had planned. Afterwards, Masaomi is hospitalized and the two are finally reunited. Once Masaomi has a few days to heal, they leave Ikebukuro together.
Personality: Saki is a kind girl, capable of a high degree of devotion. She shows this initially to Izaya, but her loyalty slowly but surely shifts to Masaomi as she realizes the true depths of her love for him. She believes in their love so much that she tells Masaomi that she doesn’t mind if he flirts with other girls, because he will always realize that his love for her is greater than anyone else. Rather quiet and reserved, she isn’t afraid to speak her mind, or to acknowledge her own faults. Because of this, she can sometimes come off as a bit quirky. She’s also rather selfless, as she was willing to sacrifice herself in order to end the violence in the city.
Fighting Ability: Saki has no known fighting ability, but her leg was broken during her abduction by the Blue squares. Though it seems to have healed since then, it can be assumed that the bone just isn't as strong as it originally was.
