His eye was still dusky and swollen as he strolled towards the hospital. Normally, Izaya wouldn’t have wanted to be seen with a black eye, but for his purposes today, it would actually come in handy to look a little wounded.
To be honest, the punch was a blow to his pride as much as it was a blow to his face. Simon was one of the few people in this city that could get away with something like that without Izaya’s manipulation turning to them. Simon was probably the only person in this city that Izaya had any real respect for. The idea of crossing Simon wasn’t ever something that occurred to Izaya, and though he’d teased the older man in Russian from time to time, he’d never once thought of trying to manipulate the man. No, Simon just… well, he didn’t deserve that. Simon was probably more of a parent or older brother figure to Izaya than anyone in Izaya’s family; he more or less had the right to put Izaya in his place.
On a subconscious level, Izaya even knew he deserved the punch, though if he admitted it aloud, it would only be used as a means of deception.
After the huge clash two evenings prior, everything in Ikebukuro had wound down very quickly. Gang members nearly disappeared from the streets, either because the gangs had broken down once more in the absence of a leader, or because the colorless Dollars had won and the remaining Yellow Scarves were too, well… yellow to reveal themselves in what was now another gang’s territory. The previous day had seen no gang activity whatsoever, though Izaya didn’t doubt that it wouldn’t take long for another gang to form.
Kids these days needed somewhere to belong, after all.
Regardless, in the adult world of crime, a gang scuffle was nothing, and while Izaya’s personal research was taking a break, his professional life was as busy as ever. Meetings needed to be held, information needed to be obtained, traded, and sold, and the ever persistent black market still required that he fill in a number of gaps.
But it was a lot to do for one guy, and a few recent requests that had passed over his desk required a great deal of travel time that Izaya simply didn’t feel like dealing with.
So, the idea occurred to him, why not hire someone to help? Why not get a few people he knew he could manipulate into helping him out without failure, and pay them nicely so they never realized just how much they were being used?
And why not choose someone who was going to need to get out of town for a while, anyway?
That was precisely why he was headed towards Raira General, and why it was better to be sporting a sorry look and a black eye. Kida would be more likely to offer him a bit of leniency if Izaya looked like he had gotten what was coming to him. Sure, he’d almost gotten the boy killed, but… it was surprising how willing humans were to forgive, especially when there was some sort of financial reimbursement involved.
Once inside the hospital, he passed by Saki’s room first, though wasn’t at all surprised to see her bed was empty. If she had found the will to give him up to Simon, he wasn’t surprised that she had also thrown off the façade of being unable to walk. There was little doubt in his mind as to where he would find her.
So he continued to the next floor, undisturbed by passing nurses (it was always amazing to him that if he just moved with purpose, like he belonged, he could get in pretty much anywhere), until he found the room he was looking for. Casually, he knocked on the door frame before slipping into the room with a half-apologetic grin on his face, greeting the couple inside the room as if they’d been friends for years, “Good morning, Saki, Kida.”

The night Masaomi was checked in, the night they were finally reunited for good, Saki had fallen asleep on his bed without really thinking about it. It had been an exhausting evening. Finding the strength and clinging to her love for Masaomi, she had been able to go against what Izaya had ordered, in order to report the devious man to Russia Sushi, and indirectly to Simon.
The nap on Masaomi’s bed had lasted about an hour before a nurse came in, disturbing the peace of her position, and she tended to the boy before quickly escorting Saki back to her room.
Saki was intent on spending as much time with him as she could now, though. She’d gone long enough only glimpsing Masaomi from her hospital window. She wanted to touch him again, hold his hand, hear his voice, laugh at his ever corny jokes. After spending the last year obeying Izaya’s orders, all she wanted now was her life back. Now that their apologies were exchanged, Masaomi knew that she had handed herself over to the Blue Squares, and she knew that Masaomi had frozen and been unable to rescue her… Everything was out in the open now. There were no more secrets and no more guilt. They could move on.
She wanted to move on.
Yesterday, she’d spent hours in Masaomi’s room, as long as the nurses would let her considering the blond was still a bit tired from the amount of blood he’d lost. Her heart fluttered every time he smiled at her or touched her hand, told a bad joke, shared a story from school. They’d lost so much time, but Saki was willing to spend as much time as she needed to catch up with him.
After another night of sleep in the hospital room that had become akin to her home, it was around midmorning when she snuck down the hall and slipped into his room. He was still sleeping and she didn’t want to wake him, but even just being beside him was enough for now, so she pulled the chair up next to his bed and rested her arm on the bed, her chin on her arm, getting comfortable until he would awake.
She’d actually been dozing on the side of his bed when the sudden knock on the door frame made her sit upright in her chair; her first thought was that it was one of Masaomi’s friends, either Ryuugamine or Sonohara, or even perhaps Kadota, who had visited Saki a few times as well, but when her head turned towards the door and her ear, focused on the voice delivering them a morning greeting, her heart skipped a beat.
It was Izaya.
There was a dark bruise around his eye, as if someone had landed a very good punch and Saki had few doubts that it was Simon, as he was the only one that she could imagine would be able to do such a thing. Her face went a little slack in surprise at seeing the man before him. He… actually looked a little sheepish, and the black eye made his handsome face seem more… apologetic, almost. It was certainly an interesting look on his face, one that Saki had never seen in all her time knowing Izaya.
She couldn’t be sure whether it was a ploy or not, but knowing Izaya, it very well could be.
It wasn’t really that she no longer trusted Izaya, or suddenly thought he wasn’t highly intelligent. Honestly, she would still put a great deal of faith in anything he told her; it wasn’t her opinion of him that made her act against him. It was only a difference in believing that his word was no longer absolute, and in knowing that she wanted to start living her own life.
Right now, she wasn’t exactly sure how she should react to him. Izaya didn’t seem angry that he’d been told on, but it was always hard to tell with him.
So she reacted naturally, smiled politely at him, and gave him a slight nod of acknowledgement in greeting.

After all the events that had happened, a little bit of rest felt good.
The last thing he had remembered clearly had been Horada calling everyone to attack him, which was laughable in itself, but after he had thrown a crowbar that cracked into his head, that was proven to be an even bigger challenge than he thought. Mikado and Anri were there when everything stopped blurring around him, and that was all he needed to know.
Saki had managed to sneak into his room and confess in everything that he already knew, but didn't want to acknowledge. In exchange, he had spoken to her, confessed everything that she already knew, but longed to hear again. So what if she was right, and he always found himself loving her? He always would, after everything that they have gone through, everything that they have done.
And just like that, Saki got the "ex" in her relationship to him dropped, as far as he was concerned.
Since then, she had been there, by his side, as long as she was allowed, and he tried to pretend that everything was alright through his haze. He was sleepy, so tired all the time, in between the blood loss and the pain killers he had been put on.
The important part was, however, that he made it out alive. He wasn't quite sure where Horada was, but that was not important right now.
The important part was that he had Saki with him, and that everyone made it out alright. Even if it was all okay in the end, though, Kida was rather embarrassed about all the shenanigans on his end. A lot of it was unnecessary, but...
Kida stopped mid-sentence when he heard the door knock, and frowned slightly when he saw Izaya coming through the door. Somebody gave him a pretty nice shiner, and it wasn't at all that Izaya didn't deserve every bit of pain that possibly was connected to that punch, so Kida decided to not pay attention to that.
"...What do you want?"

Izaya smiled at Saki's fairly positive reaction, but the smile widened at the way Kida frowned and gave him an accusatory look that accompanied his tone.
He stayed near the door way, creating distance to make Kida feel safe. It was natural for Izaya to employ tricks of human psychology, and this was just one of many. Defensive body language, distance, looking injured… it was all an illusion to give Kida the feeling that he had some control over what he was doing and saying, when in actuality every single move was the creation of some string for Izaya to tug. It was all part of a greater scheme and Izaya knew that he would get what he wanted in the end. He always did, after all, and especially so with Kida, as if there was something about the boy that was just programmed to eventually give in to him.
“Hey now, Kida,” he said sensitively, “No need to get all defensive.” That was true enough; Izaya wasn't here to cause Kida any harm, not today. Though sometimes people were hurt because of things Izaya had led them to do… he rarely actually went out of his way to hurt others. And he had no intentions of such things this morning. To be completely honest, the proposal he had ready would be mutually beneficial for all parties involved.
He took one small step into the room and offered with a casual grin, “I’m here to offer you both a job.”

Kida watched Izaya warily, not really wanting to bother trying hiding his suspicion. Just because he was injured, just because he was staying away, just because he was taking a false, kind tone, didn't make him want to listen to him.
Still...medical bills. Kida never really stopped to think about this before. It was going to be a long time before he could pay this off. There was absolutely nothing he could do to ignore those bills.
He sighed, probably a bit dramatically, as he let his head drop against his pillow completely. There were a few options that he had. Some he'd rather not talk about, some that he would rather not do himself, but that didn't mean that he wouldn't.
He had bills, rent, he needed groceries, he needed clothes, he needed hair dye -- which was not cheap -- he needed a lot of things, and now he had a hospital visit to pay for. Maybe he could convince himself that whatever Izaya was looking for.
"What's the pay?" He cut to the chase. Why bother? What did he have to gain for beating around the bush? "And if I say yes, will you leave her alone?"
Alright, so that last part had not quite been expected on Kida's end and the facepalm that followed was almost instinctual. Of course Izaya was not going to leave Saki alone, he didn't give up any of his little workers easily. This included Kida himself, he was pretty sure.
Still, he felt that there was no need to be so overly protective over Saki again. This had been a fight they had too many times before, a never-ending argument that now that he had her back, Kida was not about to let start all over again. Opening up that can of worms wasn't exactly his idea of a good time, which he had been having with her today. Why push the Izaya issue anywhere? It wasn't like ultimately Saki hadn't picked him over the informant anyway.
He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, offering Saki a shaky smile as he exhaled and opened his eyes again. "Sorry, instinct." Then he turned his head to Izaya, cocked slightly to the side, thanks to his pillow. "I guess what I mean is what am I going to be doing and who are you pissing off now?"

Saki knew Izaya all too well. She knew he was here to ask for something, though she hadn't been sure what, exactly. Towards her, Izaya's smile was friendly enough, which was good. She hadn't wanted to make any enemies when she'd tattled on Izaya to Simon, she'd just wanted to save Masaomi's life. She had managed that and had been prepared to accept the consequences of her actions, even if it meant that her and Izaya would be at odds…
He didn't seem to hold a grudge though and that was good. The last thing that she and Masaomi needed right now was another enemy, especially if that enemy was Izaya Orihara.
Regardless, Izaya was his same old self with that familiar grin on his face that implied he was up to more than he would ever let on as he told them he was there to offer them a job.
Saki's first instinct was to wait for Masaomi's reply. Even after everything they'd been through, she'd still be willing to work with Izaya (mostly because she knew that whether she chose to help him or not, she'd be used as Izaya's pawn, so it was just simpler to give in), but she needed to see how her boyfriend would handle the situation before making any move that would cross him. After so long spent apart, she'd be willing to concede an irrelevant battle or two for the sake of their relationship.
She also had good faith that, despite Masaomi's often brash attitude, he would at least be reasonable enough to listen to what Izaya had to say.
"And if I say yes, will you leave her alone?"
At that, her smile turned back towards Masaomi and her hand moved over his, squeezing it softly. The boy was always so protective of her and Saki supposed she shouldn't expect that to change. She was fairly sure she wouldn't want it to, even if he went to extremes sometimes. When he looked at her with that shaky smile, she gave him a reassuring one in return.
Overall, Masaomi didn't seem repelled by the idea and Saki looked back to Izaya to see how he would answer.

One thing Izaya really did like about Kida was his bluntness. There was something about it that reminded him of Shizuo a bit, as that man had never been fond of bullshit, but Izaya knew that Kida was at least more reasonable and willing to listen to him than Shizuo ever would be (could be? Izaya often thought that Shizuo really was incapable of higher reasoning). Izaya, of course, was the king of bullshit, though he only used it to get his way. If Kida was willing to bend to his will without Izaya fluffing him up at all, Izaya was willing to play along with that as well. It actually made his job easier that Kida was fairly practical.
"And if I say yes, will you leave her alone?"
That really made him grin. Kida should know better than to think that would happen. The resulting faceplam from the boy implied that he quickly realized how inane the question was. As long as Saki was willing to listen to him and work with him (though he knew his boundaries now, and wouldn't be trying to put Kida into danger just for the sake of his amusement again, lest she get Simon to punch him again), Izaya would use her. He would use her until she wouldn't let him, or until he found someone more convenient to use. That was simply how things worked.
He watched the sweet look between the finally reunited teens, the exchange of soft smiles, and was nearly touched. Setting them up so long ago had been an interesting decision for sure, and after provoking Saki into giving herself over to the Blue Squares, Izaya had known he'd created a strong bond. It'd be fun to watch just how long they lasted.
Kida rephrased his questions and Izaya took a few seconds to prepare his answers. He leaned casually against the door frame.
"Basically, I have some information gathering that needs done outside of Tokyo and I'm far too busy to do it," he told him unconcernedly. "I was thinking about who I could get to help out… and I realized that it would probably be a good idea for you and Saki to get out of Ikebukuro anyway, what with the angry remainders of the Blues Squares still roaming the city.
"So why not kill two birds with one stone?" he smiled and shrugged lightly. "I get an extra set of eyes and ears, and you two get safely out of town. I'd cover all travel, lodging, and food expenses for the both of you, plus extra payment based on how well you perform. And as a sign-on bonus of sorts, I'll take care of your current hospital stay for you. Sound good?"

The blond lay down, stroking Saki's fingers with his own, mulling over his options. There was always the answer of no, but even if he said no right now, he knew better than to think that Izaya would let it drop.
Izaya wouldn't let a conversation drop even if it was his own childhood at the root of the subject.
He was right, though. There was a lot of people mad at him again. It was like last summer all over again. The remnants of the Yellow Scarves were probably scattered to the corners of Tokyo, wondering what they were going to do now. Not everyone was like Horada, but the thought was still there, fresh in his memory, the threat to do who knows what to Mikado, the mere thought of what could have happened to Anri if the Headless Rider showed up a minute later.
These were the thoughts that made Kida's stomach churn. His fault for being so stupid, his fault, his fault...
He may not have lied, but he hadn't told them the truth either. They just...found him, in the warehouse...How, he didn't want to think about...
Saki's fingers got gripped. She was always a comforting presence, always so...this wasn't working. He just opted to sit up, burying his face into his knees, making some quiet excuse to Saki that he just had a headache and wanted to block out the light while he thought about it.
They still came. He wasn't completely forsaken. He's alive...but there was always, always that chance that it'll be found out again and Mikado and Anri would be back in danger. He couldn't let that happen. Mikado could at best beat Yajirobe from Dragon Ball Z, maybe. Anri...yes, she had beautiful gifts, but in the end, she was still a high school girl, still needing a knight to protect her from all the bad people in this world.
He just...it was going to happen again.
"You must have really pissed someone powerful off, Izaya."

Izaya watched as Kida seemed to mull the idea over. He knew the boy would accept it at some point. It wasn't as if he even had a choice. It was just a matter of negotiating the deal properly, as with a big enough incentive, Kida wouldn't turn him down. The boy had enemies to hide from and bills to pay. He had people to protect, including his friends, Anri and Mikado, including Saki. Izaya's offer was undeniable for someone in Kida's position.
There was a thoughtful look on Kida's face, though Izaya could tell his thoughts weren't just on the job Izaya had offered. There was a lot going on beneath that mop of messy blond hair and all Izaya could do was let it run its course.
When Kida finally did speak, a grin stretched over Izaya's lips. That train of thought, whatever it had been, had taken Kida to a very interesting place. Whether the statement came from insight, or Kida had just pulled it out of his ass, Izaya couldn't be sure. Knowing Kida, it was possibly a bit of both.
Ultimately, Izaya decided that the best response was to shrug carelessly. So what if he had? In his line of work, this sort of thing was inevitable, after all. It was what Shiki had trained him for—and he wasn't perfect, he knew that. Part of the reason he never really minded Shizuo chasing after him was because the man kept him on his toes, kept his reflexes at their peak. As long as he had Shizuo as a pseudo-trainer, Izaya should be safe.
Either way, there were days when he didn't have a choice. The decisions he made and the information that he traded was always bound to piss off someone. Izaya's one defense was that if they didn't want their information sold, they shouldn't make it so easy for him to access.
He crossed his arms as he continued to grin at the boy, "That doesn't answer my question at all, now does it?"

That shrug said it all. Izaya pissed someone off and it was a minor detail that he and Saki were just going to have to deal with later in this trip.
But what choice did he have but to say yes? Izaya wasn't giving him an option on this, and to boot, he was just being irritating. Times like this made him wish that there was something that he could do (maybe actually land a punch, for example), but there was nothing he truly could.
So, he tossed his pillow over Saki's head and toward the door, knowing that it'll simply fly helplessly out of the room due to last minute dodging on Izaya's end. It succeeded in making him feel better, however. It was a good feeling to know that at least he still had a good arm.
Kind of.
It was throbbing now from the protest of being used.
"Shit," he cursed under his breath, putting his free arm over the offending sore spots.

The inevitability of the situation seemed to finally be sinking in. Izaya directing Kida's thoughts made him realize that, really, there was only one answer he could give. It didn't matter if working with Izaya would only lead to trouble, or how much trouble that was. Kida was already in trouble. Working with Izaya certainly wouldn't make the situation any worse.
Even when Kida wasn't injured, his movements were fairly predictable, so now that Kida was injured and couldn't move as quickly, Izaya could see his actions from a mile away. He clearly saw the boy reaching for his pillow and heaving it in his direction with as much force as he could muster.
If it had been something heavier, or more threatening than a pillow, Izaya would have sidestepped it to avoid a blow, but… it was just a pillow, all feathers and cotton. Even with an injured Kida throwing it with all his might, Izaya wasn't going to find himself threatened by a pillow, so he picked his arms up to catch the thing and keep it from hitting the floor and getting dirty. It made a soft fwump sound against his chest as he caught it.
And it seemed like Kida had only hurt himself in the process.
Izaya sighed audibly, closing his eyes and shaking his head vaguely. He entered the room further at this point, fluffing the pillow in his hands as he moved around the bed. Once at Kida's side, he placed the fluffed up pillow behind him and said with exasperation, "Honestly, you're such a child."
With a another soft huff, he eyed the boy on the bed with a frown, "So from your level of frustration, I guess you realize you have to say yes no matter what, so I'll save you the trouble." His hand slipped into his pocket and pulled out a business credit card and a cell phone, holding it out towards the boy. "Starting tomorrow morning, pack your things, get out of the hospital. Leave town as soon as you can and get on a train to Saitama. Pick an inn to rest at and I'll contact you in a few days. Save your receipts."
All that was left was for the boy to take the things from his hand, sealing the deal as effectively as a handshake.

When Izaya caught his flying pillow, Kida didn't really notice. After all, something didn't pull right when he tossed it and that just felt as suckish as it sounded.
The business card and the phone presented to him got held up with his good hand, Kida looking the items over for some sort of unholy, indisputable proof that somehow, some way, Izaya had tampered with the phone, made it so that there was some way to track him.
But then he remembered it was a cell phone. It was universally easy to track a cell phone. Hell, you can still record a conversation with the phone off if you so wanted to, as long as the battery was still in. He wasn't going to bother testing that theory with Izaya, taking note of where he was supposed to go and when he would hear from Izaya next. There was also some mentioning of receipts, but Kida was more paying attention to a realization.
Saitama was nearly ripe with opportunity. He could take Saki to Tobu Dobutsu Kouen during the day, and maybe during the evening they could rent a boat and follow the river to Nagatoro. They might have missed the blossoms, but it was perfectly okay.
If he was grinning, there was nothing wrong with that.
If he was blushing, well, time with Saki.

Saki was happy to sit quietly by and merely absorb what was happening. Her goal here was to back Masaomi—she just wanted to be with him after all, and whether that meant staying in Ikebukuro or not, that was a decision for Masaomi to make, one that she would support no matter what. As long as they could be together, everything would turn out fine in the end.
The job Izaya proposed was pretty much what she had expected. Information gathering was his thing after all. Initially, Saki's job with Masaomi had been to learn more about him, no matter how insignificant the job may have seemed at the time, though it turned out that all that information had eventually led them to their position now, where Izaya could make good use of the pair of them.
Part of Saki wondered if Izaya had planned all this. Another part of wondered if planning that far in advanced was really possible. Though if anyone was capable of such a feat, it was Izaya Orihara.
Izaya's offer seemed generous as well. Where else were two high school dropouts going to be able to attain all their living expenses so simply? And sure, Izaya's jobs may not always be easy or right, but… they could more than live off what he was offering them.
Beyond that, it was simply logical. They did need to get out of town, at least for a while. Things were still so tense and with no control over fallen gang members, their lives would be plagued with danger at every turn if they decided to stay in Ikebukuro. Maybe in a few weeks, a few months, things would blow over, but for now… Leaving the city was their best option, and if Izaya was going to pay them to do so…
Instead of respond to the request, Masaomi pointed out that Izaya must have pissed someone off. Probably someone that he shouldn't have pissed off. Saki could see where that was possible, and when Izaya only shrugged in response, she knew as well as Masaomi that the statement was true.
Masaomi's next move, as if doing everything in his power not to say yes to Izaya, was to chuck his pillow at the man, though Izaya caught it with ease and merely circled the bed to bring it back to him. Izaya handed the boy a credit card, a cellphone, and gave him his instructions, which Saki took note of as well.
Saki hadn't traveled to Saitama before, but she knew there were a number of attractions. She began to think that around the information digging Izaya had them do, that this trip could be a whole lot more than working. A grin spread over her lips, her cheeks turning a bit pink as she realized that she and Masaomi would likely be sharing a room at the inn they stayed at… and perhaps they'd be sharing even more.

All it took for Izaya to know that they were both quite happy at the situation was the goofy grin that had appeared on both of their faces. He almost couldn't help but smile more genuinely in reply.
He supposed on some level, it was quite sweet. Izaya had introduced the couple a long time ago (more like he'd secretly forced Saki on Kida), and their relationship since that had only progressed more and more. Saki was so secure in the love she and Kida shared that she didn't even mind that Kida flirted with others girls (or boys) because she knew Kida's love for her would always be the greatest (…no thanks to Izaya, of course). And it was true that the two really did love each other, in the way any two teenagers could.
But in terms of their relationship, they hadn't gotten very far at all. After all, they were hardly more than children when they'd been dating at Izaya's suggestion. For the past year or so, Saki had been in Raira General, faking her continued injuries at Izaya's request, and Kida had been avoiding her as much as possible out of guilt… They spent their time coming into sexual adulthood rather far apart and had lost a year of hand holding, hugging, kissing…. and everything else that accompanied that process.
A little getaway for two was exactly what Saki and Kida needed. They needed some time away from everything, especially from the continued distraction of the city. Izaya was all too happy to give them that, especially if it meant that he could later use their deepened bond to his advantage.
For now, the guise of getting him information (though, to be fair, it was only a partial guise, as he really did want to use them for information gathering) would do as the cover for getting them out of town. He didn't actually plan on contacting them with any sort of real mission for a week or so, though he wasn't going to tell them that.
"Alright you kids," Izaya chirped lightheartedly, "I'll leave you be. Get some rest, remember my instructions, and I'll contact you in a few days."
And with that, he left the room with a little wave over his shoulder, in a much lighter mood than the one he'd come in with.

He waved a farewell to the retreating informant and smiled at his girlfriend. "Let's get going, Saki. I'll get a final check done if you pack our things and get ready."
There were fewer things to brighten a mood better than a beautiful woman and the aspect of a perfect storybook romance, after all, and Kida wasn't about to let the opportunity slip through his fingers. They had a lot of time to be making up for, and he was almost willing to just jump back into the relationship as if nothing ever happened, all the lies and deception were all forgotten. Unfortunately, Kida didn't quite work that way. This had been a learning experience, a reminder to not just trust whatever someone says. as painful as the concept was, Saki had been used to lie to him. Saki was still being used by that person as a means to keep him in check. This just plain wouldn't do for him.
Maybe, if he could remind Saki why it was that she sold Izaya out in the first place, they could finally move on with their lives, as they should, without the shadows, without Izaya.
