a.k.a. the oneshots I'm only capable of bringing to life that, together, make the grand scheme of the epic plot idea that I've had for quite a while. xD
Anri's POV:
She was supposed to protect him.
When Kida left and she saw how it had affected him, she had promised that she'd do what she could do protect him. She knew she didn't love him the way he loved her - but she cared for him deeply. She cared for both of them deeply.... But he was the only one she could help.
He was the only one around.
So when the gang members started showing up at the school, she hadn't questioned why. She thought she didn't have to. He couldn't have gotten into trouble. He was too kind and sweet and shy. It had to be connected to Kida-kun somehow. Maybe they had learned that he was - or used to be - Kida-kun's friend. But she fought them off for him and kept the encounters a secret from him. They ceased to be Yellow Scarves or whatever else and became members of the Army. She knew it was wrong to control people like that. But she had to protect him. Because who else was going to do so?
She hadn't asked questions about what his internship was for exactly. She hadn't been suspicious until she saw him get into that limousine and recognized the faces of the men inside. Akayabashi had seemed surprised to see her - as did he. He clearly didn't realize that she already knew who they were.
She tried to protect him, even then. She joined him in this dark world of the Yakuza.... She just hadn't expected them to get so far into it.
He became Shiki's heir. He became head of the Awakusu group when Shiki died from mysterious causes. He was ruling Ikebukuro by the time they graduated Raira Academy - and she found she couldn't bare to see the look of heartbreak on his face when she tried to reject his marriage proposal.
But she still didn't love him like that. She never learned how, and soon he learned that she couldn't.
He accepted her apologies - but the discussion on what to do about it didn't come up until she found him with someone else in his bed.
She didn't care how long it had been happening - or that it was happening at all. If anything, it gave her a bit of a relief. But the guilty look in his eyes was painful to look at, and she wanted to avoid the reaction of his new lover at all costs. Shizuo Heiwajima was a good man who didn't deserve to be hurt that way.
They agreed that he would see people outside of their marraige - and if she found someone she could open up to, she could see others as well. It wasn't as though they shared the same room or the same bed. Or even the same wing of the house....
She had spent so much time protecting him from pain that she hadn't seen the signs that maybe she wasn't doing a good job of it. Or that maybe he needed protecting from something she couldn't shield him from....
But that didn't prevent her from screaming at him to stop it when he pulled the trigger, blowing Seiji's face into an unrecognizable pulp. Mika was being restrained nearby, and the sight of Seiji being murdered was too much for her.
Mikado shot the gun three more times before being satisfied with the murder, then he handed the gun to Aoba. He looked over at Anri, and smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry you had to see that, Anri-chan."
